Why do we celebrate Valentines Day?
Valentines Day is the most important day for lover's in the western society, but why do we celebrate? Valentine was a Christian priest in Rome in the third century AD at the time of the Emperor Claudius. At this time the Emperor was keen to increase the size of his army and believed that young single men made better soldiers as they did not have wives and children to keep them at home. He tried to enforce this by creating a law banning marriages.
As a Christian, Valentine was opposed to the law and continued to marry couples in secret. Unfortunately he was jailed and sentenced to death. His popularity did not fade and people began to visit him in jail, throwing flowers and notes in his window. Whilst in jail he befriended the prison guard's daughter and on the day of his death, 14th February, he left her a note signed "Love from your Valentine". Valentine subsequently became the St Valentine, the patron saint of lovers and February 14th synonymous for exchanging love messages and simple gifts such as flowers.
